Async Cables

Things to Know About Different Async Cables

Async cables are used to transfer data between devices that can communicate independently without a shared clock signal. They transfer the data bit by bit between computers and servers, and to other hardware devices. The common cables are asynchronous cable and Octal cable. Let’s discuss more asynchronous cable options below.

Cisco Cab HD8 Async Cable

The main purpose of the Cisco Cab HD8 Async cable is to connect a single network to different devices. With this cable, one network can control 8 different devices via an engineer central router or terminal server.

It has a small rectangular connector at its end, which is also called a high-density compact serial connector. This directly fits into an async module card or Cisco router. And on the other end, the cable splits and is converted into 8 different RJ-45 plugs. The main benefit of this cable is that you don’t have the bulk of different wires at the back of devices, as the wiring becomes simpler this way.

Octal Cable

Octal cable, also known as octopus cable, is similar in concept to the HD 8 cable. The octal is a bit older version of it in a more standard form. The cable is also a 1-8 breakout cable, and its role is to connect console ports to different 8 routers or switches. On one end, it has a 68-pin connector, also known as a V35 connector.

This connector is connected to the back of the terminal server. It is composed of 8 long wires that connect to the RJ45 connector. In data centers, when engineers have to manage 50 to 100 routers at a time, they dont check them one by one; instead, they connect a port-in cable directly to the terminal server and access all the routers on one screen.

Rollover Cable

A rollover cable is also known as a Cisco console cable, which is the most important cable for networking. It commonly comes in light blue color. When any new router or switch comes into the company, it never has an IP address or internet access. To configure it for the first time, connect the router directly to your laptop via its console port. So, rollover is used for that purpose.

It’s called rollover because the pin mapping is reversed. If the number on the pin is 1,2,3,4 …., 8, the wires will put in reverse direction like 8,7,6,…,2,1. This means you will place pin 1 on the switch of 8. This cable is used solely for administrative and configuration tasks. You cannot use it for the internet or transferring data. It is limited to only controlling the software system.

Modular Adapter

A modular adapter is the small plastic converter or cable connector that connects two  different kinds of cable connectors with each other. So, in short it acts like a bridge. It connects telephones, handset cords, and wall jacks.

It uses 4-position and 6-position modular plugs and is also used in fiber optics. If you have a simple ethernet cable and you want to place it in a computer serial port, then you will use this adapter.
